24/7 History

A brief history of the 24/7 prayer movement.

 
Night and day prayer is Biblical.  (Luke 18:7–8; Isaiah 62:6–7)

  • In David’s Tabernacle (I Chronicles 15-16): Singers and musicians ministered to the Lord 24 hours a day.
  • Luke 2:36-37: Anna fasted and prayed day and night in the temple.
  • Acts 1-2: The early church prayed constantly for 10 days prior to Pentecost.
  • 15th century, Bangor Abbey, Ireland: A group of monks began a prayer meeting that lasted for over 300 years!
  • 18th century, Herrnhut, Germany: A small community of Moravians began a 24/7 prayer meeting that lasted for over a hundred years, mobilized 3000 missionaries and converted John Wesley.
  • In 1973, David Yonggi Cho, Pastor of the Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea, established a Prayer Mountain in night and day prayer.
  • On September 19th, 1999, the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri, started a prayer and worship meeting that has continued for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to this day.
  • Currently, there is a global movement of 24/7 prayer and worship around the world, transforming lives and seeing change in the spiritual atmosphere of communities, nations, and the world.
